 Phil has a particular interest in how individuals think, communicate and function when under stress. He enjoys finding creative solutions to challenging problems; he’s been known to use puppets to resolve professional differences! He’s passionate about helping find solutions to ‘stuck’ situations that include honest and collaborative approaches with everyone involved.

Phil believes that there is always a solution to even the most challenging of problems, looking at how we act in our professional relationships and how we can get the most out of each other to achieve better outcomes for children, young people and families.

Alongside his 15 years as a trainer, Phil also has significant experience as a Therapeutic Social Worker delivering innovative and creative therapy services to children, adults and carers who have experienced abuse or trauma. He has led and supervised a multi-agency team of therapists, social workers and family workers specialising in therapeutic interventions for complex and chaotic families. As part of this role, Phil provided interventions and assessments in respect of the impact of emotional abuse and trauma on children. He has also provided therapeutic interventions to adoptive and fostering placements where there are children with complex behaviours.

Qualifications

Phil is a qualified and registered Social Worker and has a postgraduate qualification in Psychological Trauma. Phil has training in trauma therapy, attachment therapies, solution-focused and motivational approaches.

What has been your proudest moment as a practitioner?

When a parent told me that they wished that I had been their children’s social worker years ago when two of their children were removed and then adopted… ”because you’ve really listened and understood us, and helped us see what’s happened that’s brought us to this place.”

What has been your proudest moment as a trainer?

When explaining attachment theory to a room full of professionals and one saying: “I’ve understood this for the first time in 20 years of doing this job and I had great fun too.”

What makes you get up each morning?

The knowledge that I have the privilege to be able to improve someone’s life – but only if I get up.

How do you want to be remembered?

As someone that cared deeply for other people and that worked hard to understand other people’s perspective. Also, as someone that had a sense of humour. I’d like people to not remember that I was also often grumpy!

What’s one piece of wisdom that guides you?

Knowledge is knowing what to say, wisdom is knowing when to say it.
